A new IEA report puts project structure and financing at the centre of Indonesia’s battery storage discussion.

What changed in September?

The International Energy Agency published a dedicated report on financing battery energy storage systems in Indonesia on 3 September 2026. It examines how investment can support the battery storage objectives in the country’s 2025–2034 electricity supply plan.

The report describes deployment as being at an early stage. It highlights the need for business models suited to local conditions, alongside a potential role for private investment given spending constraints at the state-owned utility, PLN.

Why this matters for energy procurement

Our interpretation: an equipment quotation is only one part of a storage project brief. Before comparing systems, buyers should define who owns the asset, who operates it and which service it is expected to deliver. A grid-support project and a customer-side backup system should not be treated as interchangeable opportunities.

For EPC teams and distributors, the useful next step is to turn a broad request for battery storage into a documented application brief. Keep assumptions visible so that changes in operating requirements can be traced through the proposal.

Questions to put in the project brief

  • What is the intended use: renewable energy integration, power shifting or backup?
  • Who is responsible for grid coordination, commissioning and ongoing operation?
  • Which operating data and acceptance documents will the purchaser require?
  • Which commercial assumptions still need local confirmation?

Keep the market signal in context

The report is a market and financing assessment, not an announcement of a purchase order or a guarantee of project returns. It does not establish that a particular supplier or product is approved for an Indonesian project. Buyers should confirm the requirements of the specific site before moving to equipment selection.
